What is bad breath? A natural people-repellent! It is also a cause of great embarrassment and discomfort for everyone involved in every scenario containing it (bad breath) as any part of its setting. You can look it up on the internet to confirm (We strongly recommend against carrying out any type of a practical experiment on this.) that no one wants to be associated with bad breath in any way.

What causes it? Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of bad breath, followed closely by dehydration and unhealthy practices such as smoking and drinking. If you’re sure these aren’t the reasons and your bad breath problem seems worse than other people’s or if no usual cures are working for it, you may want to go to see a doctor because severe bad breath (also known as the condition “halitosis”) is mostly a symptom of tonsillitis, ulcers, it can also be acting as a warning that you might be at risk for heart-disease, you may need a liver cleanse, or pre-term delivery, some other serious illness, etc.

There can be a lot of different reasons behind bad breath, including hormonal changes (yes, even menstrual irregularities can cause bad breathe) or chemical imbalances in the body. Now that we have an understanding of what causes it, the more important question emerges: how to cure it? Do not worry; we’re here to answer your query!

Mother Nature to the rescue!

Although the primary purpose of mouth-washes is marketed to us to be a cure for bad breath, experts suggest that it actually worsens the problem in the long run! Apparently, mouth-wash removes all your oral bacteria, which sounds good until the temporary removal of bacteria causes your body to over-produce bacteria. Instead of worrying about the technicalities of this new revelation or  about the capitalist scheme behind the production and promotion of a potentially harmful product, let’s just turn to Mother Nature to cure our bad-breath related problems because she has not one, not two, but multiple cures to offer. Here are five natural fruits which can help to freshen your breath naturally:

Mint (and other foods containing Chlorophyll)

Mint not only eases heartburn and indigestion, it can also fight the bacteria in your mouth which causes heartburn. It contains chlorophyll which is a powerful antioxidant and can be effective in your fight against bad breath and body odor. Parsley, spinach, zucchini, green beans, and broccoli are also great sources of chlorophyll.

Lemon (and other naturally acidic foods)

You may want to consult your doctor first because acid exposure to your teeth is a sensitive matter.

It is an age old-cure; lemon to cure bad breath. The acidic content in lemon and other citrus foods help prevent bacteria growth in your mouth. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant. The strong but pleasant odor of lemon can also act as a deodorizer by masking the bad breath or freshening your breath. Other naturally acidic foods which may help are grapefruits and apple-cider vinegar.

  1. Apples

Apples are known to increase saliva production in the mouth and also battle bad breath. All the increased saliva production can help cleanse your mouth, and you will have a pleasant taste in your mouth along with freshened breath. A study published in the Journal of Dental Research is about the possibility of polyphenols (found in apples and green tea) reducing the risk of bad breath.

Ginger (and other herbs)

Try adding botanical herbs such as ginger, cardamom, fennel, dill, and cumin to your diet as they keep the digestive system healthy and eliminate chances of bad breath originating from poor digestion.

  1. Yoghurt

Yoghurt is famously considered as an anti-dote for bad breath. The active bacteria in it (said to be Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus) can have a positive impact onodor-causing bacteria in the mouth and freshen your breath!
